How to Increase Your Metabolism with the Correct Foods
By Jay • May 27th, 2009 • Category: Losing Weight TipsThe quickest way to lose weight quickly is to increase your metabolism, which in turn allows the body to burn off more stored fat. But how to increase your metabolism? If you plan to lose weight over a number of months, then building up your metabolism will be far more beneficial than jumping erratically from one diet to the next. The primary advantage of an increased metabolism over a conventional diet regime is that all diets reduce calorie consumption but the body soon adapts to the new levels of calorie intake, whereas a high metabolism immediately decreases your intake of calories before dieting has even begun.
The best way to appreciate this concept is when you think of a body builder. A body builder can eat huge amounts of calories per day, yet remain in great shape. This is due to a very high metabolic rate, and means that they will never have any problems with fat.
Some diets cause your metabolism to drop and this is often referred to as a plateau. Increasing exercise, and/or reducing food consumption may not rectify this problem, as the core concern lies in the poor metabolic rate. Once the body adapts to a new diet’s intake levels, no more excess fat will be burned. As a result of this, it is imperative to increase your metabolic rate BEFORE dieting to ensure a continual weight loss campaign which will allow you to reach your desired weight.
What are the key benefits of an increased metabolism?
When we lose weight, we lose protein from our muscles. Less protein is consumed when dieting and therefore protein in our muscles has to be broken down and used as a source of energy, and to fuel our immune systems. A loss of protein however will always reduce the body’s metabolic rate. Protein is lost from cells and consequently lowers the body’s lean body weight, which in turn lowers the metabolism. Continuing with a low calorie diet during this time, may cause you to gradually PUT BACK ON WEIGHT.
As protein escapes from our muscles, fluid is lost since protein holds approximately four times its weight in fluid. Losing many pounds within a few weeks is typically due to losing fluids from the body and not fat. Once the fluid is replaced, many dieters will see a period where they regain weight, as they never lost fat from their bodies, only water levels which are soon relinquished.
An increased metabolism leads to an increase in fluid, meaning more gradual, but continual weight loss. The body will be more likely to hold onto protein, releasing less water, and burning the fat stores as opposed to protein stores.
Less exercise is required with an increased metabolism, and less effort is needed when exercising. There is much less chance of regaining weight at a later stage, and because your metabolic rate is higher, you can still enjoy your favourite foods, as the calorie intake levels will be broken down faster. Therefore, you do not have to prepare special recipes, or purchase low-fat alternative meals. Ultimately, you will lose a higher percentage of fat loss rather than water loss, leading to a continual and efficient weight loss program.
